Trick Gives iPhone Owners Free Access to Paid Content Inside Apps

4:53 p.m. | Updated Adding comment from Apple.

A simple workaround allows iPhone and iPad owners to download paid content inside some apps without paying. No hacking is required.

A Russian software developer demonstrated the method in a YouTube video this week. It involves installing system certificates and tweaking a Wi-Fi setting. Then, when an iPhone owner is trying to buy something inside an app, like bonuses for a game or an issue of a magazine, a box will pop up that says, ?Like in-appstore.com?? A user would hit the ?Like? button to download the content free.

The Russian blog i-Ekb.ru was first to spot the tutorial. A quick test of the technique found that it worked with a few apps, but some who have tried it out have reported that it fails with some apps.

Apple says it is looking into the issue.

?The security of the App Store is incredibly important to us and the developer community,? said Natalie Harrison, an Apple spokeswoman, in a statement. ?We take reports of fraudulent activity very seriously, and we are investigating.?

The company already provides a method to validate purchases inside apps before content is delivered, and presumably the apps that are immune to the workaround are using this. But app developers that aren?t validating in-app purchases could be missing out on a lot of money.

Apple?s App Store is the most popular storefront for buying mobile apps, and it?s the most desirable platform for developers looking to make good money. But it has become a big target for people looking to cheat the system. Some iOS app developers have complained about missing payments that amount to million of dollars, most likely as a result of fraudulent purchases.
