Apple Store now has Lightning to HDMI and VGA adapters at $49 a pop, souped-up iPad charger

Apple Store now has Lightning to HDMI and VGA adapters at $49 a pop, soupedup iPad charger

We noticed during the iPhone 5 launch that Apple had a big caveat with its Lightning to 30-pin adapter: no video or iPod out support. Now that the new iPads are here with that same connector, the problem's been partially rectified -- for a sum. Namely, you can grab the Lightning to VGA or digital AV (HDMI) adapters for a rather princely $49, though there's no sign of any iPod support yet. If you're still holding out for generic models instead, you may want to rethink that plan, as there's a control chip inside each, and so far only Apple holds the authentication keys. Also, a new $19 12W USB power adapter (which connects directly to the Lightning port) has also appeared for the 3rd and 4th generation iPads, bumping the previous version's 10W -- meaning your slate might get charged a bit quicker.

GoPro's new Hero3 cameras shoot super high-res 4K video

2 hrs.

The folks at GoPro have updated their popular line of rugged cameras. The new Hero3 models are smaller, lighter and capable of snagging super high-resolution 4K footage.

There are three models in the Hero3 line: The Black Edition, the Silver Edition and the White Edition. The models are priced at $399, $299?and $199, respectively.?The Black Edition can shoot 4K video while the White and Silver Edition stick to 1080p.

The awesomely high resolution of the Black Edition is pretty darn appealing, but there's a little catch: If you're shooting in 4K mode, the frame rate you'll get will drop to 15fps. (Lower resolutions can be shot at frame rates up to 120fps.) This is rather unappealing since you'll most likely want to shoot speedy action?? such as extreme sports or similar?? with a rugged little camera like that. Ah, well. At least YouTube added support for 4K videos some time ago, so you can share your low frame rate footage easily and show everyone how gorgeous it is.

The new Hero3 models can be preordered now. No word as to when they'll ship.

Steve Moxon : 'Stupid Hysteria Over Normal Male Sexuality' | Anti ...

Steve Moxon on the current ?stupid hysteria over normal male sexuality? and the anachronism of the Victorian set age of consent? :

If you showed photos of average girls ages fifteen or fourteen to the average man and did not label them with the girls? ages, then all normal men would find them attractive and would react sexually. [This can be measured physiologically, so there is no need to rely on possibly dishonest verbal responses.]

???? The age of puberty in girls ? its onset (menarche) ? is just eleven or below; and therefore a fifteen- or fourteen-year-old girl is several years post-puberty. Not only is she sexually mature but very near her peak of fertility, which is the age at which men have evolved to find females most attractive of all. Furthermore, the girl is not emotionally immature, given that the hormonal surge at puberty is responsible for initiating the adult organisation of the brain. It is no surprise then that surveys show the majority of people ? male and female, let alone just girls ? have already had full sex before their fourteenth birthday.

???? Why, then, is the age-of-consent set in law at age sixteen? This was set back in Victorian times when the average age of menarche was at the astonishingly late age of seventeen. So the age when sex was deemed illegal even back then ? in the context of a wild panic about what was the bogus notion of ?the white slave trade? ? was set actually below the age of female puberty.

???? The age-of-consent law is now a serious anachronism, and means that most people break the law. It is a major infringement of the freedom of young people, especially of boys?given the two-year maturational gap between the sexes and the preference girls have for older males. It is also an inappropriate attack on natural sexual relationships between a girl and a considerably older man, such as in the current case of the fifteen-year-old girl and her thirty-year-old teacher. There are plenty of instances of?pupil-teacher relationships that become marriages with children that long endure. That such relationships are deemed a supposed abuse of authority is no defence for the silly hysteria, because status is the very key attribute of men that girls have evolved to find particularly attractive. The pupil-teacher sexual relationship is ever likely to happen and could not make better evolutionary sense. In the contemporary context of the PC (?political correctness?) totalitarian attack on the mass of ordinary people, the law regarding sex is a direct attack on boys and men.

???? So how does Jimmy Savile ? a notably high-status male ? fall foul of what should be common-sense acceptance of the reality of sex? Only if he did indeed use coercion as alleged; but here is where the likely truth should stop anyone jumping to that conclusion. There is plenty of research showing a very high proportion of even formal allegations of sexual assault to police are fabrications (likely the majority; see the analysis in the book, The Woman Racket); and for often highly trivial reasons ? especially to cover mild embarrassment. Girls and women routinely regret sexual encounters and retrospectively redefine them as coercive. [This must have been much more the case prior to the free availability of near-infallible contraception and the legal availability of abortion.] Then we must add the dimension of also well-researched ?false memory? construction, especially given the great elapse of time ? several decades.

???? This is only the start of teasing out multiple factors that conspire to create a bogus feeding frenzy. Savile?s incredible public profile guarantees attention for the attention-seeker. His death and the absence of any forensics or (other) witness guarantees immunity of even outlandish accusations from being challenged. The media ? let alone the police ? trawl is an open invitation for any of the huge number of girls who had sexual encounters with Savile to come forward with all sorts of fanciful elaborations of what actually took place.

???? The likely reality of Jimmy Savile?s sexual behaviour is that he was a normal man in the abnormal situation, through being high-status and within the pop world in a newly ?sexually liberated? era, of being in the milieu of a large number of girls at the peak of their attractiveness and willing to engage in sexual activity. It would be amazing if, given the volume of sexual activity, that the ever-present problems of mis-communication between the sexes (notably female mixed come-on and coyness signals) would not lead on occasion to sex the girl did not want. A man in a man?s ?dream? position as Savile found himself easily could become used to the sexual activity such that his guard may be lowered as to checking that the girl was fine with what was going on. Of course, it may be also that Jimmy Savile was cavalier and in fact an abuser; but there is no basis of determining this given the nature of any evidence available. The only thing we know for sure is that his high profile more or less obliged him to be larger-than-life, so even his seeming oddness is likely no clue to anything. Myself, I?ve always found him creepy, and I never warmed to the man even in early Top of the Pops days (never mind the cringeworthy Jim?ll Fix It), but that?s probably just a lowly-male reaction to how society indulges the minority of high-status males.

???? The upshot is that an honest view of Jimmy Savile is very much at odds with our contemporary perspective, which is a politically-driven hysteria that will come to be seen as such a madness as to be a warning from history.

Regarding the last line of Moxon?s piece ? I?ve been consoling myself this week with the thought that even if it is not realistic to hope to bring to justice the instigators of the present sexual hysterias in their lifetimes, at least we can document who these monsters are, and what motivated them, for the education of those who come after us.? At least we can be assured that these creatures will ultimately live in infamy and serve as warnings to future more enlightened generations against superstitious sexual savagery and the most primitive of human evil.

Can Long-Distance Relationships Ever Work? and for How Long ...

Each week, three of EMandLO.com?s guy friends share their advice. This week they answer the following: ? Can long-distance relationships ever work? If so, how, and for how long? ?

Single Straight Guy (Colin Adamo): Some people like the structured aspect of a relationship: getting off from work, heading home, cooking dinner, and talking to their sweetheart to find out what s/he did today. And this can all be achieved with distance. For some people, this isn?t boring at all. It?s like the missionary position of relationships ? many of us would sigh at its boredom, but for some couples it really does the trick. If you need a few more metaphorical positions in your romantic interactions, this set up just isn?t sustainable. If you know it?s going to be less than a year or that you can commute back and forth every other weekend, you can probably bring enough energy to the relationship to make it last. Otherwise you might need to switch positions (with other people).

Married Straight Guy (Irad Eyal): Long-distance relationships work in the same way that a stopped clock is right two times a day ? if your relationship is destined to last 60 days, but you only see each other one weekend a month, you?re looking at a two-and-a-half year affair. The good news is you?re in a perpetual honeymoon phase! But if you conclude that a strong relationship would ipso facto last thousands of years in long-distance mode, you?re good at math, but you?re also wrong. The danger comes at the point when a relationship with potential gets stymied by its own slow smolder. It?s a fire starved for fuel- if it can?t progress, it will die a slow, painful death. Like this mixed metaphor.

Committed Gay Guy (Terence): I?ve been with my beau for 13 years, six months and 10 days as of today. I?m the one who celebrates the sixth month mark. He doesn?t have a clue. We spent years 3, 4, 5, and 6 on completely different continents ? as you do when America?s homophobic immigration policies won?t let your Australian lover stay in the country or marry you because your relationship is not as real, dignified or deserving as your heterosexual counterparts ? who, I might add, can order a bride online from some far off place and live happily ever after in the good ?ol US of A.

But I digress. The don?t say absence makes the heart grow fonder to be cute. It?s too painful to be cute. But absence does ratchet up the romance and desire exponentially. Think of the reunions. Oh my!

But alas, if the foundation of your relationship ain?t rock solid, and solid for like at least a couple years, then I think you got a whole heap of struggles to make it worth. But if you are solid and have a strong faith in each other mixed with a bit of flexibility, then all you need is a bit of cash for those visits.

With the launch of Xbox Music, Zune is truly no more (update: Zune Pass users get 1,000 Microsoft point parting gift)

With the launch of Xbox Music, Zune is truly no more

It's over, folks. Or at least nearly over. Write it down -- time of death: 12:01AM ET, October 16. That's when the Zune brand is officially no more, and "Xbox Music/Video" and its store replace the Zune Marketplace; the final, quiet end of a brand that's been waning for years. "Yes, the Zune brand is gone, and the Zune products are gone," Xbox Music GM Jerry Johnson told us in a meeting last week. While Zune devices will still work with Windows 7, and the Zune Pass simply becomes the Xbox Music Pass, the brand is effectively no more, joining the Kin and Microsoft Bob in the annals of MS history.

Bizarrely, the branding will continue on for Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 users, with the Zune Marketplace mirroring Xbox Music's content. That's likely due to Xbox Music being exclusive to Windows 8 devices (which includes the Xbox 360, despite its age, and Windows Phone 8) -- Microsoft promises a continued focus on Xbox Music going forward, while Zune support drops out. In the end, though Zune was a failure for Microsoft, Johnson said it was a worthwhile learning experience for the company. "The Zune brand got associated with a device, and what we did with Xbox Music is actually turn around and say, 'Let's build something from the ground up, leveraging what we've learned from a lot of these different things.' But it's not gonna be device-centric, it's gonna be service-centric," he explained.

In Johnson's eyes, the failure of Zune as a brand is directly tied to the failure of Zune as a device -- and having the highly successful Xbox brand tied to its media offerings, he's hoping to skirt previous negative perceptions and relaunch Microsoft's place in media delivery. Whether that'll happen remains to be seen, but either way, this is the final nail in the Zune's coffin -- not just as a device, but as a thing in the world.

Update: Looks like Microsoft hasn't forgotten the loyalty of the diehards who stayed with Zune until the end, as Zune Music Pass users are getting 1,000 Microsoft Points for free along with the switch to Xbox Music.

NY school's blackface assault skit criticized

(AP) ? A pep rally skit by three white high school students who wore blackface and parodied Chris Brown's arrest for assaulting Rihanna has officials in a largely white New York district vowing to set clearer expectations for school events.

The skit was one of several pop culture parodies performed Friday at Waverly High School as part of an annual "Mr. Waverly" competition, Superintendent Joseph Yelich said. The one in question had a male student portraying Brown standing over another cowering actor playing Rihanna; a third male student played an arresting officer.

A picture from the skit posted to social media and other sites including Facebook, Tumblr and CNN iReport drew thousands of views and dozens of comments, many calling the skit blatantly racist and blasting the idea of drawing laughs from domestic violence.

Brown was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to felony assault for the attack on Rihanna in 2009. Both singers are black.

Yelich said he has not kept track of the number of complaints to the small district in southern New York's Tioga County but said the "Mr. Waverly" tradition is being re-examined. Other skits featured Tarzan chasing a gorilla, hockey players brawling, and Spider-Man.

"I mean, this is a pep rally; we're supposed to be cheering on our team," said Yelich, who has been on the job a little over a year. "The fact that skits are involved and parodies ... it strayed from that and it got into a different kind of competition."

A Waverly High alumnus who posted comments on CNN said that while he doesn't believe the students meant to offend, he was surprised administrators didn't intervene.

"There were adults who should have stood up and said, 'Hey, guys, this is not OK. Blackface is not OK. Is it illegal? No. But you should really not do that,'" Matthew Dishler, 24, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Rose Garrity, executive director of A New Hope Center, an agency in nearby Oswego County that assists victims of domestic and sexual abuse and other crimes, also put responsibility on the adults.

"They were trying to make something funny that is far from funny, and they were being incredibly racist while they were doing it," Garrity said. "I doubt any of those children had any idea about the history of racism and minstrels or anything like that."

Garrity said her agency has been working with Waverly and other districts on anti-violence and anti-bullying programs and would continue its outreach.

"Domestic violence isn't funny," Garrity said. "Three women every day are killed in this country by the man they're partnered with. It's anything but funny."

Stocks rose on Monday after a strong gain in retail spending suggested that consumers could be getting more confident about the economy. Bank stocks rose broadly after Citigroup delivered a strong earnings report.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 95.38 points to close at 13,424.23, its biggest gain since Sept. 13.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 11.54 points at 1,440.13 and the Nasdaq composite index rose 20.07 points to 3,064.18.

Companies that rely on consumer spending, like Lowe's, TJX Cos. and Yum Brands, rose after the government reported that retail sales rose 1.1 percent in the U.S. last month. The Commerce Department also revised August growth up to 1.2 percent, marking the two largest gains since October 2010.

Sales rose in most major categories. Electronics and appliances jumped 4.5 percent with help from the new iPhone. Sales at auto dealers increased 1.3 percent. Building materials and garden supplies, furniture and clothing sales all gained, too.

"The retail sales numbers tell us that the economy in general, and consumer spending in particular, probably did better than most expected in the third quarter," said Hugh Johnson, chairman and chief investment officer of Johnson Illington Advisors.

Citigroup rose $1.91, or 5.5 percent, to $36.66 after beating beat Wall Street earnings estimates.

Most other financial stocks followed Citi higher. Bank of America rose 3.5 percent, and JPMorgan Chase rose 1.8 percent. However, Wells Fargo continued to struggle after reporting a record profit on Friday. Analysts warned it might have trouble making money on interest payments for loans. Its stock fell 1 percent on Monday, after dropping on Friday, too.

Economic figures from China helped support markets in Europe at the start of a week that could offer greater clarity on the economic fates of Greece and Spain.

China's inflation rate fell to 1.9 percent in September from 2 percent the month before, reinforcing investor hopes for more stimulus in the world's second-largest economy.

Good news for two major drugmakers boosted pharmaceutical stocks and pushed the whole health sector to the biggest gains among 10 industry groups in the S&P 500.

Eli Lilly said a potential stomach cancer treatment met goals for improved patient survival. It hasn't yet submitted the drug, ramucirumab, for government approval.

And Abbott Laboratories said an experimental drug regimen cured 99 percent of patients with hepatitis C. Patients in the trial had genotype 1 hepatitis C, the most common type in the Western world, and the hardest to treat.

Eli Lilly rose $2.08, or 4 percent, to $52.53. Abbott rose $2.77, also 4 percent, to $72.05. Other drugmakers also rose. Pfizer and Merck rose more than 1 percent and Bristol-Myers Squibb rose 2.5 percent.

Telecommunications stocks were the only declining industry among the 10 in the S&P 500.

Travel deals website operator Travelzoo Inc. fell again after warning on Friday that its poorly-performing hotel search business will hurt third-quarter results. On Monday, its stock fell 85 cents, or 4.2 percent, to $19.17.

Home health care provider Amedisys Inc. fell $1.25, or 9.4 percent, to $12.08 after saying revenue from health insurer Humana Inc. will shrink.

Investors sold government bonds and drove yields slightly higher. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose to 1.67 percent from 1.66 percent Friday.

The price of crude oil fell a penny to finish at $91.85 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Lincoln County Humane Society to open 'high ... - Bullet News Niagara

Bullet News

ST. CATHARINES ? The Lincoln County Humane Society has announced a partnership to open a high-volume spay/neuter clinic in St. Catharines.

The clinic, a one-year pilot project, is a partnership with the Ontario SPCA. It?s aimed at reducing the over-population of cats in the Garden City and further reduce the shelter?s euthanasia rate.

?The Lincoln County Humane Society euthanasia rates have gone down over 20 per cent with our progressive and creative adoption programs,? said Kevin Strooband, executive director of the Lincoln County Humane Society, referring to the highly successful adoption events in September, where over 100 animals were adopted.

?This high-volume spay/neuter model will only help reduce it further.?

The LCHS spay/neuter clinic is located at 160 Fourth Avenue, in south-west St. Catharines and will begin services December 2012. The clinic welcomes the public, shelters and rescue groups, regardless of geography or income level.

Spaying/neutering pets will also reduce health risks and physical stress, and improve behaviour in your pet. Fixed pets are also less likely to roam, reducing the risk of injury, accident and loss.

To book an appointment for a spay/neuter, please visit website, www.spayneuter.ontariospca.ca.

Malala's tragedy a test for Pakistani society (Comment)

On the morning of October 12, Malala Yousafzai had 70 percent chances of recovery; amazing, considering she was shot at point-blank range only a few days ago. Having successfully removed a bullet from her spinal cord, doctors treating her at a military hospital in Rawalpindi reportedly informed her family that her recovery in the following days would be critical. So we wait patiently for news, preferably good, from her bedside.

While Yousafzai rests, the world outside is in a nervous tizzy. The Taliban is now threatening members of the Pakistani media for their coverage, and strong stance, on this incident. According to a BBC Urdu report, intelligence agencies have intercepted conversations between Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Hakimullah Mehsoud and his subordinates, in which he reportedly directed them to take action against opponents in the media. The government is now offering protection to any media organisation that seeks it.

Indeed, this erstwhile blogger-for-the-BBC has been the headline to beat ever since October 9. That's when her school bus was stopped by a Taliban gunman in a town named Mingora, in Pakistan's restive Swat valley in the North West. He demanded that she identify herself, then shot her repeatedly. (Two of her schoolmates, both girls, were injured as well.)

The unwarranted viciousness of the attack has spurred Pakistan's most influential men into speaking out in protest, using strong words in turn: "inhuman", "barbaric", "terrorist". Late night on October 12, The Guardian reported that, taking an exceptionally critical stance, the Sunni Ittehad Council has issued a fatwa denouncing the Taliban's attempts to justify Yousafzai's shooting. October 12 was marked as a day of prayers for Yousafzai and observed across Pakistani mosques.

In the last week, public figures, including Army Chief General Ashfaq Kayani, Chief Justice Ifthikar and Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf, have visited Yousafzai, while calling on the nation to stand united against those who attacked her. President Asif Ali Zardari reportedly reached out to Yousafzai's family. Interior Minister Rehman Malik termed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region a hub for terrorists, adding that the government is seriously considering another offensive in the north-western tribal agencies. Not to be left out, Imran Khan, viewed off late as a serious political threat to Zardari's ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP), offered to foot the costs of her treatment.

However, Khan has been criticised by some sections for turning the debate back towards the unmanned drones that have killed thousands of Pakistanis. Khan isn't the only one liable to make the same tenuous link between a barbaric act and a foreign attack on Pakistani sovereignty.

Although his is an important voice, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chief of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazal, used the opportunity to condemn Yousafzai's attackers to also censure those who do not protest the bombing of a mosque by drones as vociferously. It's this digression of the argument that Najam Sethi, editor of the weekly The Friday Times, railed against in his editorial: "To suggest that Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head because of America's drones is not just lazy deduction; it is disingenuous, even dangerous deflection from the real issue."

At the very least, there is the common denominator of disgust at the TTP's actions and rationalisations. But some chose to see a silver lining - like Pakistan's Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, who told the CNN that Yousafzai's unfortunate case brings the promise of a "turning point". This is signified by the rejection by many Pakistanis of the justifications offered by the Taliban. The prayers being offered in mosques and schools for her speedy recovery, demonstrations in the streets, and strong statements made every day since October 9 -- all serve as proof for those who are hope for the reintroduction of a rational debate over religious devotion versus fanaticism. Indeed, Yousafzai's case is being described as a watershed moment in Pakistan's contemporary history.

More importantly, the attackers have inadvertently glorified Yousafzai's role as an activist and articulate critic of the Taliban. Having found fame (and infamy in some quarters) through her diaries for BBC Urdu, Yousafzai had already won admirers, even awards, for her outspokenness.

This week, as newshounds tracked her every development, the world was reminded of the innocent charm of this Anne Frank-like observer. Her diaries for the BBC, recorded in 2009 when she was a mere 11-year-old, did more than just detail the fear psychosis surrounding the Taliban. Her accounts highlighted the sadness, frustration and fear of a girl child who craved knowledge, as well as the company of others like her.

In January 2009 she recorded, "On my way from school to home I heard a man saying 'I will kill you'. I hastened my pace... to my utter relief he was talking on his mobile and must have been threatening someone else over the phone."

The Taliban continues to threaten Yousafzai. She will need continued support and protection from Pakistani society if she is to escape a repeat attempt.

Lumia 920T leaks in China, could be Nokia's ticket to a huge new subscriber base

DNP Lumia 920T leaks in China, could help Nokia tap into China Mobile's massive subscriber base

It's not just America waiting keenly on the Nokia Lumia 920 and its PureView powers -- new images have popped up proving that this Windows Phone 8 device is also headed to China. Corroborating earlier reports of a Lumia 920 that is compatible with China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network, the phone's settings screen mentions "CMCC", which is a reference to that operator -- although it's not clear whether the handset will also support the carrier's fledgling LTE network. The pics only show a dark-colored variant, but Nokia will no doubt be depending on the booming Chinese market to bring some sunshine to its balance sheet.

What The Swedish Pirate Party Wants With Patents, Trademarks, And

14

Infopolicy ? Christian Engstr?m

Infopolicy ? Christian Engstr?m

This afternoon, I?ll make a presentation to a group of patent lawyers in Stockholm, with the title ?What does the Pirate Party want with Patents, Trademarks, and Copyright??. Here?s a rough summary of what I?m about to tell them, including a few links that will probably get mentioned.

Patents should be abolished as soon as possible. An increasing amount of research, predominantly in the United States, shows us that the patent system as a whole has a negative effect on society. It can be positive for specific actors (mostly pharma companies and patent trolls), but for society as a whole, the patent system is damaging to innovation, to competition, and to economic growth.

The study The Case Against Patents (25 pages) by Michele Boldrin and David Levine at Washington University in St Louis is a good read on our view of the patent system (summary here).

When it comes to pharmaceutical patents, we agree that it?s not feasible to abolish the patent system and hope that the market makes sure enough research just happens anyway. Therefore, we?d like to replace pharmaceutical patents with the system known internationally as delinkage. It means that pharmaceutical research is financed directly from the public coffers, with research results made freely available for anyone to use in any way, spurring a free competition between manufacturers of generic (non-patent-encumbered) drugs. This system would save at least half of the taxpayers? bill for pharmaceuticals, while at the same time channeling more money to research. As a positive side-effect, besides the savings, it would also save hundreds of thousands ? or millions ? of lives in the third world.

When it comes to patents in all other areas, we?re willing to listen to anybody and everybody who believes they can show that the patent system provides any kind of net positive effect to society in additional areas, but so far, nobody has been able to show such a net positive (with the exception of pharma). In every such case, the burden of proof is on those who argue for an introduction or continuation of these governmentally-sanctioned monopolies, and not on us who argue for their abolition.

Trademarks are basically good, as they primarily serve as consumer protection. If it says ?Coca-Cola? on the can, I know that The Coca-Cola Company guarantees its quality. If I am dissatisfied with the product, I know where I can go to complain, but if I like it, I also know where I can go to get more. This also gives the trademark system a long-term effect of rewarding good and honest companies. While this is a positive effect, the protection of consumers is the foundation and the most important.

In some countries, like France and Italy, the trademark rights have grown to also include punishments for consumers who buy counterfeit goods (either because they want to, or because they were fooled to). This is a bad development that we?re firmly against. The legitimacy of the trademark system comes from protecting consumers. Should it be distorted into legislation that punishes consumers, like patents and copyrights do, it would lose its legitimacy.

Compared to patents and copyrights, it seems that the trademark business has kept their house cleaner against degenerate subversion, and the trademark practices haven?t fallen for the same unhealthy expansion as the patent and copyright laws have. There have been a few upsetting cases of abuse or attempted abuse, like when Louis Vuitton tried to censor a Danish artist ?to protect its brand? (it?s likely they haven?t done anything more damaging to the brand in modern years), or when a guitar maker who got the phrase ?Born to Rock? registered as a trademark for guitars starts suing T-shirt vendors to ban them from printing the phrase at all, despite clearly not being used as a trademark in the latter case.

This type of abuse must be fought down, primarily by the industry itself, secondarily by the courts, and tertiarily by legislators if nothing else works. But the foundation of trademark law remains sound: forcing and rewarding honesty towards consumers.

Copyright must be reformed. We?d like to keep the copyright monopoly for commercial use (but with shorter, more sensible terms of protection). The big problem is that copyright has expanded in the past 20 years, going from being something that only corporations needed to care about, into something that criminalizes the entire young generation (and more and more people who aren?t even particularly young anymore).

The Swedish Pirate Party wants to;

  • Legalize file-sharing and other non-commercial sharing of culture between private individuals, both up- and downloading. As a direct consequence, search engines like The Pirate Bay will also be legal, as nobody can be charged with ?aiding and abetting? an activity that is fully legal in itself (the file-sharing between private individuals).
  • At most 20 years of protection from the publication of a work. Among other things, this also solves the problem with orphan works and the ?black hole of the 20th century?.
  • Registration after five years. Rightsholders who want to keep using their commercial monopoly after the first five years must register their works, so that commercial users who want to pay for use know where they can get a license to do so. This also solves the problem with orphan works.
  • Sensible regulation for quotations, parodies, and remixes even when it comes to audio, video and more (today, you can only quote text ? Ed.), and a harmonization within the EU of exceptions to copyright (?exceptions and limitations?).
  • A ban on DRM (digital restriction mechanisms), or at a bare minimum, making it explicitly legal to break digital restriction mechanisms if needed for any use that is itself legal.

If we reform copyright law according to this proposal, it would solve 99% of the serious problems that today?s copyright causes, while at the same time, 99% of the business models that work today in the entertainment and cultural sectors would keep doing so if the companies would adapt ever so slightly to a new world.

It?s not just the Swedish Pirate Party that thinks copyright law should be reformed like this. Since one year back, it?s also the official position of the entire Green group in the European Parliament.

There?s more on this proposal for copyright reform in the book The Case For Copyright Reform, written by me and Rick Falkvinge, the founder of the Pirate Party. The book is available for a free download as an e-book, or available at-cost as a print-on-demand book, at copyrightreform.eu.

(AP) ? An Israeli lawmaker expressed dismay Saturday over anti-Semitic remarks attributed to the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's spiritual guide as activists called on Washington to cut contacts with Egypt over the issue.

Mohammed Badie said during his weekly message that Jews were spreading "corruption," had slaughtered Muslims and desecrated holy sites. He further called on Muslims to fight Israel, saying Zionists only understood force.

Israel has increasingly become concerned over its relations with Egypt as the formerly repressed Muslim Brotherhood has risen to power with the election of an Islamist president following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. The jitters come despite a pledge by newly elected President Mohammed Morsi that Egypt will abide by a 1979 peace accord with Israel.

Muslim Brotherhood members frequently make statements against Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem, accusing Jews of trying to smother the city's Islamic identity and calling on Muslims to rise up and protect the city and its holy shrines.

But Badie's statement was the first time the group's supreme leader has made such strong statements since Morsi's election. Morsi has avoided speaking of Israel in public, making only pledges to respect Egypt's international agreements.

Badie referred to longstanding Muslim calls to "defend" Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque, a holy site for both Muslims and Jews. Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven from there, while Jews call the compound the Temple Mount because of the biblical Jewish temples that stood there.

"It is time for the Muslim (nation) to unite for the sake of Jerusalem and Palestine after the Jews have increased the corruption in the world, and to shed the blood of (Muslims)," Badie said in comments published on the group's website and emailed to reporters on Thursday.

"Muslims must realize that restoring the sanctuaries and protecting honor and blood from the hands of Jews will not happen through the parlors of the United Nations, or through negotiations. The Zionists only know the way of force," he added.

Israeli lawmaker Danny Danon called on the U.S. and the European Union "not to bury their heads in the sand and ignore the worrying reality."

"Incitement and anti-Semitism in Egypt must stop before the U.S. sends (Egypt) hundreds of millions of dollars," he said in a telephone interview. "The direction of the new Egyptian government is very worrying and we are following with great concern what is being said and done and what is not being done there against extremists."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which monitors anti-Semitic incidents worldwide, also said the U.S. could not pretend to conduct "business as usual" when the Brotherhood made such statements.

"We are not dealing with a YouTube video or a lone extremist imam, but a call to anti-Semitic violence by a man who has tens of millions of followers and leads the organization that controls Egypt's future," the center's Rabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper were quoted as saying in a statement.

They called on the White House to condemn the speech, and sever official and unofficial contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood.

A leading member of the Brotherhood, Rashad Bayoumi, said the group can't ignore Israel's "offense" of Islamic shrines. He said official Egypt policy toward Israel is a separate matter.

"But what there is an offense and meanwhile an agreement," Bayoumi said, explaining that something must be done about what he said were desecration of holy sites, and Israeli construction and digging in the holy site in the old city.

U.S. officials were not immediately available for response. Israeli government officials said they would not comment on the speech.
