Sports Chatter (10-10-12) ? West Life - Serving the Westshore ...

The Magnificat cross country team competed at the Medina Cross Country Festival this past weekend and took runner-up honors.

?The ladies came in a strong second place led by senior captain, Macey Walker in fifth place overall,? Blue Streaks head coach Anjanette Whitman said.??Junior Angelina Klucznik continues to be a solid second runner for the team, followed by sophomore Katie Whitmore.?Seniors, Katie Kerr and Erin Gallagher rounded out the top five.?

Magnificat?s B-team was the first B-team to finish of the total 22 teams in the varsity race. Each of the top five ladies on the B-team are freshmen, including Katelyn Lenehan, Sara Paponetti, Jane Platek, Mara Bedell and Julia Whitmore.

?This B-team demonstrates a strong future for the Blue Streaks and we are very excited for what is to come.? Whitman said.

U.S. Olympian Ken Chertow will?conduct a wrestling camp at Lutheran West High School on Friday and Saturday. This camp will provide wrestlers with personalized instruction and training as they prepare for the upcoming season. Chertow recently kicked off his nationwide Weekend Warrior Training Camp Tour. He will be conducting one-, two- and three-day wrestling camps in states across the nation, now through December.?In addition to being a U.S. Olympian, Chertow is a three-time NCAA All-American and three-time Academic All-American at Penn State University. He has been teaching and coaching wrestling for more than 20 years, including very successful coaching stints at both Penn State and Ohio State universities, and he has seen his campers succeed at the state, national and world level. This is an ideal opportunity for wrestlers to learn the skills necessary to help them reach their highest goals. Chertow?s camps have helped produce more than 500 state champions over the past decade. The Bay Village Lacrosse Association (BVLA) will sponsor a ?Football Watch Party? fundraiser featuring the Ohio State?versus Penn State game on Oct. 27 from 5:45-9 p.m. at the Copper Cup, 680 Dover Center Road in Westlake. In addition to the OSU game, there will also be a live feed to the St. Ignatius versus St. Edward 7 p.m. football game. Event proceeds will benefit BVLA to help fund the group?s capital equipment drive, support Bay Village boys and girls lacrosse programs and provide lacrosse scholarships to student athletes in need. In addition to football, a lot of lacrosse ? the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. ? will be on tap at this fun-filled fall event. While mostly social, this event will give parents ? especially those who are new to the sport ? the opportunity to speak with youth league, high school and even some college lacrosse coaches and officials who will be on hand to answer questions in an informal setting. Select vendors have been invited to showcase the newest and latest lacrosse equipment. Lacrosse camp and league information will also be available for parents interested in offseason playing opportunities for their athletes. The BVLA Football Watch Party will feature a reverse raffle drawn at halftime, football squares games and a silent auction with items ranging from the newest lacrosse gear to a one-of-a-kind signed, framed picture of Michael Jordan. In addition, a wheelbarrow laden with a variety of adult beverages will be raffled off at the event. Door prizes will also be given out during the game. Ticket cost is $25 per adult. Ticket price includes beer, wine, pop and heavy appetizers during the game. Each attendee will also receive a Bay Lacrosse window decal. Westlake Recreation is currently registering boys and girls in grades 1-6 for the?Youth Basketball League. This program is open to any child who lives in Westlake, goes to school in the city or is a current member of the Westlake Recreation Center. The programs are designed to instruct youngsters in the fundamentals of the game of basketball. Volunteer coaches are needed for all divisions. The registration deadline is Nov. 2. Either way, these preseason workouts will help you develop the skills to take your game to the next level.?Each session will focus on the fundamentals of the game, building as the weeks go along to prepare players for game competition. Ball handling, passing, shooting footwork and defense will be the primary skills taught by coaches Jeff and Brianne Huber. Each player will be given drills to work on at the conclusion of the workouts so that their improvement will continue. Grades K-3 are from 12-12:45 p.m. and grades 4-6 are from 12:45-1:30 p.m. Fee is?$75 for members and $85 for nonmembers.
