People from State Farm Insurance in Columbia went to Oklahoma City Tuesday to help with mass insurance claims that come with a disaster like the one in Moore, Okla.
Spokesman Jim Camoriano said members of the company's National Catastrophic Services Team were already in the state after Sunday's storms in Shawnee. Now they are looking for places to set up giant outdoor claims centers where people can walk-in or drive-thru to make a claim.
He said the challenge can be working in areas with no power. The teams bring lights that run on generators and even satellite telephones.
Camoriano said that, as of Tuesday night, authorities were still not letting agents or even homeowners back into the damaged neighborhoods.
But he heard one story of hope. A woman's son saw where his mother's house once stood and, amazingly, one piece of paper was recognizable in the rubble. It was an insurance document with the woman's insurance agent's phone number. Camoriano said the agent and the woman met at a church Tuesday,?and he delivered a $5,000 check to get her temporary housing.
Camoriano said people taking claims in events like this are prepared to work with people in shock, those who may only have their name to give and no information about a policy number or local agent. He said if possible, you can better prepare for tragedy by taking a home inventory or using a video camera to do one, then keep that information off site in a secure place like a safe deposit box.
