'Puppeteer': First details of Japan Studio platformer - gamescom 2012

New Puppeteer details have been revealed by Sony.

Announced earlier this week, Puppeteer stars Kutaro, a young boy transformed into a puppet by the evil Moon Bear King, who promptly eats Kutaro's wooden head.

Puppeteer is a 2D platform title in which the environment changes around the player, much like being on stage.

Players gain new abilities by finding heads for Kutaro, such as the spider head, hamburger head and skull head.

Using heads on related objects opens up new areas and gameplay opportunities. Using the spider head by a web, for example, uncovers a hidden stage.

Losing his head for more than three seconds, meanwhile, sees Kutaro lose a life. Players can earn extra lives by collecting moon sparkles, the game's currency.

Kutaro also has access to a pair of magical scissors, which are used to cut through the gaming environment, cut around objects and eliminate enemies.

Speaking at gamescom, art director Gavin Moore said that Puppeteer was designed to reawaken his son's imagination and was inspired by Japanese puppet theatre.

It was created from scratch by the team at SCE Japan, and includes a full complement of hand-drawn visuals and animations.

Puppeteer was announced at Sony's gamescom conference alongside Rain, an adventure game where players control an invisible boy who can only be seen when walking in the rain.

The firm also revealed new PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale characters and Cross Buy for PS3 and Vita titles.
