Education and Skills Required
At present, there are no specific majors in colleges that provide the education required to become an energy auditor. However, one who seriously considers pursuing the job as a career choice can take energy audit training and certification programs. During the training you will be taught some skills and knowledge about science, buildings, diagnosing air leakage, building assessment skills, durable healthy homes, heating and cooling systems, building envelopes, water heating and base load, thermal imaging, and energy audit software.
To gain a good grasp on the training materials, it is better if you equip yourself with basic skills such as reading comprehension, active listening, speaking, writing, critical thinking, time management, operation analysis, service orientation, and quality control analysis. On the other hand, you will also need to master the knowledge of building construction, mathematics, mechanics, physics, engineering and technology, sales and marketing, administration and management, computers and electronics, and design.
Energy Audit Oversight
Based on data gathered from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the 2010 wage data and 2008-2018 employment projections, until currently there are about 994,000 energy auditors employed in the United States alone. The salary for the job averages $67,710 per year or about $32.55 per hour.
