BERKLEE CITY MUSIC EXPANDS TO BIRMINGHAM

Programs from Birmingham, Charlotte and Dallas Join Consortium that Provides Underserved Students With Tools and Support to Flourish as Musicians and Individuals

June 25, 2013 (BOSTON): Today, national nonprofit Berklee City Music Network announces growth of its program with the newest Network members: Birmingham-based Audiostate 55, Charlotte-based 2xSalt Music Ministry and Dallas-based Trumpets4Kids. With a commitment to providing music education to underserved and at-risk youth at no cost, the programs respectively become the 38th, 39th and 40th sites to join the Berklee City Music Network. Together, the Network sites provide a pathway to higher education by engaging passionate, talented youth in underserved communities in a high-quality contemporary music education program.

For more than 20 years, Berklee City Music has been harnessing the energy of contemporary music to provide free music education to 4th through 12th graders in underserved communities, reaching more than 16,000 students in the United States.

?At a time when funding for the arts and music are being cut from public schools, the needs for quality after-school music instruction couldn?t be greater. These new partners will continue to expand our mission to provide youth the tools and support they need to flourish as students, and responsible residents of the planet, ready to shape their world,? As members of the Berklee City Music Network, 2xSalt Ministry, Audiostate55 and Trumpets4Kids also become part of a virtual network that offers instant access to the Berklee PULSE? Music Method, a proprietary online music education platform, as well as webcasting and videoconferencing technologies to provide face-to-face interaction between Berklee City Music Network students at member sites and faculty and students at Berklee College of Music and Berklee City Music in Boston.

The three new Network sites meet Berklee City Music?s rigorous criteria, including:

• A commitment to providing opportunities;

• A means of creating social value with music resources to youth from underserved communities;

• A clearly articulated commitment to contemporary music education;

• Are well-established and favorably regarded in their community;

• And provide well-maintained program facilities suitable for delivering a high-quality music education in a safe environment.

2xSalt Ministry was founded in 2004 to work with at-risk youth in the under-served West Charlotte community, through sports, after-school mentoring, and other outreach programs. In 2011, 2xSalt Music Ministry was established to allow youth to explore and develop their musical interests following local music programs budget pressures by public schools, leaving students with much more limited options.?

In association with the Woodlawn Foundation, Audiostate 55?s Woodlawn Music Tech Summer Camp and the Musical Arts, Entertainment, and Industry Programs are designed to build awareness of college and career opportunities in the field of music production and recording engineering. Students are exposed to the latest music and video production tools, such as Garage Band, Pro Tools, Reason, iMovie and Media Composer. Students learn how to create professional music and video recordings suitable for MTV, BET, and YouTube.

About Trumpets4Kids:

Trumpets4Kids donates trumpets to students who can't afford them and who are reaching toward higher levels of learning. Students apply for a trumpet and sign a contract agreeing to practice one hour a day, maintain the trumpet, as well as teach, help and perform for other students. They are encouraged to reach out and perform especially for kids who are in at-risk situations (homeless, in detention centers) as well as for the elderly. This brings a new dimension by which each child may begin to see beyond his or her present situation.
