Apple Store now has Lightning to HDMI and VGA adapters at $49 a pop, souped-up iPad charger

Apple Store now has Lightning to HDMI and VGA adapters at $49 a pop, soupedup iPad charger

We noticed during the iPhone 5 launch that Apple had a big caveat with its Lightning to 30-pin adapter: no video or iPod out support. Now that the new iPads are here with that same connector, the problem's been partially rectified -- for a sum. Namely, you can grab the Lightning to VGA or digital AV (HDMI) adapters for a rather princely $49, though there's no sign of any iPod support yet. If you're still holding out for generic models instead, you may want to rethink that plan, as there's a control chip inside each, and so far only Apple holds the authentication keys. Also, a new $19 12W USB power adapter (which connects directly to the Lightning port) has also appeared for the 3rd and 4th generation iPads, bumping the previous version's 10W -- meaning your slate might get charged a bit quicker.

GoPro's new Hero3 cameras shoot super high-res 4K video

2 hrs.

The folks at GoPro have updated their popular line of rugged cameras. The new Hero3 models are smaller, lighter and capable of snagging super high-resolution 4K footage.

There are three models in the Hero3 line: The Black Edition, the Silver Edition and the White Edition. The models are priced at $399, $299?and $199, respectively.?The Black Edition can shoot 4K video while the White and Silver Edition stick to 1080p.

The awesomely high resolution of the Black Edition is pretty darn appealing, but there's a little catch: If you're shooting in 4K mode, the frame rate you'll get will drop to 15fps. (Lower resolutions can be shot at frame rates up to 120fps.) This is rather unappealing since you'll most likely want to shoot speedy action?? such as extreme sports or similar?? with a rugged little camera like that. Ah, well. At least YouTube added support for 4K videos some time ago, so you can share your low frame rate footage easily and show everyone how gorgeous it is.

The new Hero3 models can be preordered now. No word as to when they'll ship.

Steve Moxon : 'Stupid Hysteria Over Normal Male Sexuality' | Anti ...

Steve Moxon on the current ?stupid hysteria over normal male sexuality? and the anachronism of the Victorian set age of consent? :

If you showed photos of average girls ages fifteen or fourteen to the average man and did not label them with the girls? ages, then all normal men would find them attractive and would react sexually. [This can be measured physiologically, so there is no need to rely on possibly dishonest verbal responses.]

???? The age of puberty in girls ? its onset (menarche) ? is just eleven or below; and therefore a fifteen- or fourteen-year-old girl is several years post-puberty. Not only is she sexually mature but very near her peak of fertility, which is the age at which men have evolved to find females most attractive of all. Furthermore, the girl is not emotionally immature, given that the hormonal surge at puberty is responsible for initiating the adult organisation of the brain. It is no surprise then that surveys show the majority of people ? male and female, let alone just girls ? have already had full sex before their fourteenth birthday.

???? Why, then, is the age-of-consent set in law at age sixteen? This was set back in Victorian times when the average age of menarche was at the astonishingly late age of seventeen. So the age when sex was deemed illegal even back then ? in the context of a wild panic about what was the bogus notion of ?the white slave trade? ? was set actually below the age of female puberty.

???? The age-of-consent law is now a serious anachronism, and means that most people break the law. It is a major infringement of the freedom of young people, especially of boys?given the two-year maturational gap between the sexes and the preference girls have for older males. It is also an inappropriate attack on natural sexual relationships between a girl and a considerably older man, such as in the current case of the fifteen-year-old girl and her thirty-year-old teacher. There are plenty of instances of?pupil-teacher relationships that become marriages with children that long endure. That such relationships are deemed a supposed abuse of authority is no defence for the silly hysteria, because status is the very key attribute of men that girls have evolved to find particularly attractive. The pupil-teacher sexual relationship is ever likely to happen and could not make better evolutionary sense. In the contemporary context of the PC (?political correctness?) totalitarian attack on the mass of ordinary people, the law regarding sex is a direct attack on boys and men.

???? So how does Jimmy Savile ? a notably high-status male ? fall foul of what should be common-sense acceptance of the reality of sex? Only if he did indeed use coercion as alleged; but here is where the likely truth should stop anyone jumping to that conclusion. There is plenty of research showing a very high proportion of even formal allegations of sexual assault to police are fabrications (likely the majority; see the analysis in the book, The Woman Racket); and for often highly trivial reasons ? especially to cover mild embarrassment. Girls and women routinely regret sexual encounters and retrospectively redefine them as coercive. [This must have been much more the case prior to the free availability of near-infallible contraception and the legal availability of abortion.] Then we must add the dimension of also well-researched ?false memory? construction, especially given the great elapse of time ? several decades.

???? This is only the start of teasing out multiple factors that conspire to create a bogus feeding frenzy. Savile?s incredible public profile guarantees attention for the attention-seeker. His death and the absence of any forensics or (other) witness guarantees immunity of even outlandish accusations from being challenged. The media ? let alone the police ? trawl is an open invitation for any of the huge number of girls who had sexual encounters with Savile to come forward with all sorts of fanciful elaborations of what actually took place.

???? The likely reality of Jimmy Savile?s sexual behaviour is that he was a normal man in the abnormal situation, through being high-status and within the pop world in a newly ?sexually liberated? era, of being in the milieu of a large number of girls at the peak of their attractiveness and willing to engage in sexual activity. It would be amazing if, given the volume of sexual activity, that the ever-present problems of mis-communication between the sexes (notably female mixed come-on and coyness signals) would not lead on occasion to sex the girl did not want. A man in a man?s ?dream? position as Savile found himself easily could become used to the sexual activity such that his guard may be lowered as to checking that the girl was fine with what was going on. Of course, it may be also that Jimmy Savile was cavalier and in fact an abuser; but there is no basis of determining this given the nature of any evidence available. The only thing we know for sure is that his high profile more or less obliged him to be larger-than-life, so even his seeming oddness is likely no clue to anything. Myself, I?ve always found him creepy, and I never warmed to the man even in early Top of the Pops days (never mind the cringeworthy Jim?ll Fix It), but that?s probably just a lowly-male reaction to how society indulges the minority of high-status males.

???? The upshot is that an honest view of Jimmy Savile is very much at odds with our contemporary perspective, which is a politically-driven hysteria that will come to be seen as such a madness as to be a warning from history.

Regarding the last line of Moxon?s piece ? I?ve been consoling myself this week with the thought that even if it is not realistic to hope to bring to justice the instigators of the present sexual hysterias in their lifetimes, at least we can document who these monsters are, and what motivated them, for the education of those who come after us.? At least we can be assured that these creatures will ultimately live in infamy and serve as warnings to future more enlightened generations against superstitious sexual savagery and the most primitive of human evil.

Can Long-Distance Relationships Ever Work? and for How Long ...

Each week, three of EMandLO.com?s guy friends share their advice. This week they answer the following: ? Can long-distance relationships ever work? If so, how, and for how long? ?

Single Straight Guy (Colin Adamo): Some people like the structured aspect of a relationship: getting off from work, heading home, cooking dinner, and talking to their sweetheart to find out what s/he did today. And this can all be achieved with distance. For some people, this isn?t boring at all. It?s like the missionary position of relationships ? many of us would sigh at its boredom, but for some couples it really does the trick. If you need a few more metaphorical positions in your romantic interactions, this set up just isn?t sustainable. If you know it?s going to be less than a year or that you can commute back and forth every other weekend, you can probably bring enough energy to the relationship to make it last. Otherwise you might need to switch positions (with other people).

Married Straight Guy (Irad Eyal): Long-distance relationships work in the same way that a stopped clock is right two times a day ? if your relationship is destined to last 60 days, but you only see each other one weekend a month, you?re looking at a two-and-a-half year affair. The good news is you?re in a perpetual honeymoon phase! But if you conclude that a strong relationship would ipso facto last thousands of years in long-distance mode, you?re good at math, but you?re also wrong. The danger comes at the point when a relationship with potential gets stymied by its own slow smolder. It?s a fire starved for fuel- if it can?t progress, it will die a slow, painful death. Like this mixed metaphor.

Committed Gay Guy (Terence): I?ve been with my beau for 13 years, six months and 10 days as of today. I?m the one who celebrates the sixth month mark. He doesn?t have a clue. We spent years 3, 4, 5, and 6 on completely different continents ? as you do when America?s homophobic immigration policies won?t let your Australian lover stay in the country or marry you because your relationship is not as real, dignified or deserving as your heterosexual counterparts ? who, I might add, can order a bride online from some far off place and live happily ever after in the good ?ol US of A.

But I digress. The don?t say absence makes the heart grow fonder to be cute. It?s too painful to be cute. But absence does ratchet up the romance and desire exponentially. Think of the reunions. Oh my!

But alas, if the foundation of your relationship ain?t rock solid, and solid for like at least a couple years, then I think you got a whole heap of struggles to make it worth. But if you are solid and have a strong faith in each other mixed with a bit of flexibility, then all you need is a bit of cash for those visits.

With the launch of Xbox Music, Zune is truly no more (update: Zune Pass users get 1,000 Microsoft point parting gift)

With the launch of Xbox Music, Zune is truly no more

It's over, folks. Or at least nearly over. Write it down -- time of death: 12:01AM ET, October 16. That's when the Zune brand is officially no more, and "Xbox Music/Video" and its store replace the Zune Marketplace; the final, quiet end of a brand that's been waning for years. "Yes, the Zune brand is gone, and the Zune products are gone," Xbox Music GM Jerry Johnson told us in a meeting last week. While Zune devices will still work with Windows 7, and the Zune Pass simply becomes the Xbox Music Pass, the brand is effectively no more, joining the Kin and Microsoft Bob in the annals of MS history.

Bizarrely, the branding will continue on for Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 users, with the Zune Marketplace mirroring Xbox Music's content. That's likely due to Xbox Music being exclusive to Windows 8 devices (which includes the Xbox 360, despite its age, and Windows Phone 8) -- Microsoft promises a continued focus on Xbox Music going forward, while Zune support drops out. In the end, though Zune was a failure for Microsoft, Johnson said it was a worthwhile learning experience for the company. "The Zune brand got associated with a device, and what we did with Xbox Music is actually turn around and say, 'Let's build something from the ground up, leveraging what we've learned from a lot of these different things.' But it's not gonna be device-centric, it's gonna be service-centric," he explained.

In Johnson's eyes, the failure of Zune as a brand is directly tied to the failure of Zune as a device -- and having the highly successful Xbox brand tied to its media offerings, he's hoping to skirt previous negative perceptions and relaunch Microsoft's place in media delivery. Whether that'll happen remains to be seen, but either way, this is the final nail in the Zune's coffin -- not just as a device, but as a thing in the world.

Update: Looks like Microsoft hasn't forgotten the loyalty of the diehards who stayed with Zune until the end, as Zune Music Pass users are getting 1,000 Microsoft Points for free along with the switch to Xbox Music.
